Items we can't haul

Federal, state, and Knox County rules keep certain items out of our trucks and dumpsters. Here's exactly what we can't take — and where to drop it off safely instead.

What's prohibited

If your item appears below, do not place it in our dumpster or have it ready for our crew. We've listed safe disposal options for each category.

Hazardous & Flammable

  • Gasoline, diesel, kerosene
  • Propane tanks (full or partial)
  • Motor oil & transmission fluid
  • Paint thinner & solvents
  • Lighter fluid & fireworks
Where it goes: Knox County Household Hazardous Waste Facility — free drop-off for residents.

Wet Paint & Chemicals

  • Liquid paint (latex or oil)
  • Pesticides & herbicides
  • Pool chemicals
  • Cleaning solvents
  • Adhesives & sealants
Where it goes: Dry out latex paint with kitty litter or hardener — once solid, we can take it. Liquid chemicals: HHW facility.

Batteries & Electronics with Cells

  • Car & marine batteries
  • Lithium-ion batteries (loose)
  • Power tool battery packs
  • E-bike & scooter batteries
Where it goes: Most auto parts stores (AutoZone, O'Reilly) take car batteries free. Best Buy & Lowe's recycle small batteries.

Asbestos & Lead

  • Asbestos siding, tile, or insulation
  • Popcorn ceiling material (suspect)
  • Lead-based paint debris
  • Vermiculite insulation
Where it goes: Requires a licensed asbestos abatement contractor — we cannot legally transport it.

Medical & Biohazard

  • Needles, syringes, sharps
  • Prescription medications
  • Blood-soaked materials
  • Used medical equipment with fluids
Where it goes: Drop sharps containers at participating pharmacies. Meds: DEA Take-Back days or pharmacy kiosks.

Explosives & Ammunition

  • Live ammunition
  • Gunpowder
  • Flares & signal devices
  • Commercial fireworks
Where it goes: Contact Knoxville Police Department non-emergency line for safe surrender.

Auto Fluids & Tires (in volume)

  • Bulk used motor oil or antifreeze
  • Tires (limit 4 per load — surcharge applies)
  • Whole vehicles & large engines
  • Fuel-filled equipment
Where it goes: Drain and remove fluids first. Most tire shops accept old tires for a small fee.

Other Restricted

  • Dead animals
  • Human or pet waste
  • Radioactive materials
  • Industrial sludge or bulk dirt over 1 yard
Where it goes: Call Knox County Solid Waste at (865) 215-6700 for guidance.

What we do haul

Almost everything else is fair game. A quick highlight reel:

Furniture & mattresses
Appliances (fridges, washers, dryers)
Electronics & TVs
Construction debris & drywall
Yard waste & brush
Hot tubs & playsets
Dried-out latex paint cans
Empty propane tanks (valve removed)

When in doubt, ask us first.

Text us a photo and we'll confirm in minutes whether we can take it.
